A school visit for HIV education

Hi everyone,

Yesterday we took the NYU volunteers to a local elementary school to give an introductory talk about HIV (we didn't discuss the ways to sexually transmit it, just other ways it can be passed, an explanation of the virus and answered some questions). The volunteers also taught the children the hokey pokey and simon says which both seemed to be quite popular. The kids here are always so excited to have visitors and we had almost 400 students waiting outside in lines to greet us when we showed up.

After the HIV classes we had an organized soccer game between our volunteers and a young boys soccer team from a local school. We lost 4-3, and it looked like a very tough game. The local boys definitely know their stuff. Our volunteers were saved by some of our Ghanaian translators playing with our side.

The group work has been going nicely and I would say fairly smoothly. We are bringing them back to Accra very early Thursday morning so that they can catch their flight back to New York and the next morning I pick up the study abroad students who will be studying and working with us for the Spring semester. It's a very full January but going well so far in spite of my back issues. The pain pills are keeping it manageable for now.

Hope everyone is doing well.
